i have been in journalism over 45 years and have been practicing it so long that mere definitions just escape me!
given the nature of a 35-or-fewer word lead i might say summary – staccato probably is an ultra-short lead. in the business one doesn’t stop to say – now am i writing a narrative lead? then i guess i can use up to 50 words” – one assesses the story and writes the lead and article accordingly.
performance gaps should be identified in the body of a review – you don’t announce them at the beginning unless it is an unmitigated disaster and do not save them for the end, which should recap and have a positive note. the conclusion should actually assess the entirety of the performance.
the conclusion of a review should give a summation of the over-all rating of the product as well as placing it in the context of the other products being reviewed, if you are talking about soap or cheese. and inasmuch as one is reviewing, not reporting, it is pretty much impossible to maintain a completely objective voice but you know what? far too many reporters these days fancy themselves reviewers or critics. they editorialize in news stories and then spout off about being objective in reviews. topsy turvy.
ALWAYS use your gut instinct, it is the best trait you can develop.
