Antivirus Software…Poll?

What would you consider the best *FREE* antivirus software???

personally i dont use a free anti virus but im doing a speech over the various antivirus software there are and i wanted to include an alternative (from the ones you need to buy).

any place where i can find reviews for that product…

THANK YOU
AVG, Anti Vir, and Avast are some of the ones i have found…

AntiVir and avast are pretty good. But, AVG is clearly the best free anti-virus package. Here’s why:

1. It’s easy to install and download. It will install even with other commercial AV packages running. That allows you to switch without leaving your self vulnerable.

2. It has a small memory footprint. It is able to protect your system using less the 10 MB or RAM.

3. It updates without any user intervention. I’ve been running AVG for over a year and not once have I had to intervene in update.

4. It works!!. I’ve not been infected by a virus even once since I installed AVG (I do also follow some best practices … see below)

If your using a commercial AV package like McAfee or Norton. You are wasting your money and your RAM. To justify their continuing subscription fees they bloat the software with features you DO NOT need. Those features bog your system down without doing much to keep you safer.

To keep your computer safe do the following:

1. Use AVG.

2. Use a good AntiSpyware package. Right now, I prefer Windows Defender. It catches spyware other don’t. That preference will change from time to time as spyware the antispyware tools evolve.

3. Keep informed about your computer. Use CCleaner, WinPatrol, AutoRuns or similar tools to stay aware of installed and start up programs and clean up temporary Internet file often.

4. Don’t download software from unreliable sources. The software at the Free Software Catalog ( http://www.gara.com/free-software/ ) is all safe. You can find AVG and Windows Defender there too.

5. Backup up your data often. There’s no better protection then a good backup of your data. You can alway reinstall and configure operating systems and other application software. But you must protect your data!!

6. Be discriminating about the websites you visit. I’ll say no more on this subject. If you like to partake in certain … hmm hmm .. material … per se .. get DVD player and video club membership !!!!

7. Don’t be suckered by “free security scans” from companies you never heard off. Use AVG and Windows Defender and other security software recommended by a variety of sources. You can find most of the at the Free Software Catalog (see above).

8. Use the Firefox browser!!

9. Be wary of “free” music and other media downloads. File sharing networks can be very dangerous. If you are downloading files from these sources, make sure you scan files before using them.

10. Be security conscience.

Safe Surfing!!!!
