Need help with choosing the right speaker system for my new plasma tv.?

I have been driving myself crazy with all the products out there: Bose, Sony, Denon, Polk – All I want is an inexpensive sound system (doesn’t have to be surround) for my plasma tv. The cost of these surround systems and bad reviews on products have me crazy. I don’t have the room for rear speakers and I would prefer to just buy two GOOD speakers and a GOOD receiver – something to compliment the TV sounds and maybe a stereo effect. The Polk SurroundBar sounds like a good idea but I would then have to buy the bass cabinet and receiver adding up to the price of the Bose. Too much $$$ for my viewing. Thanks for your help.

If you don’t need surround sound, don’t buy surround sound. It’s more expensive than stereo audio & offers poorer quality sound, unless you want to spend thousands of dollars.

Just go to a big box store, look for a stereo amp with a good THD rating. 0.05% THD @ 20Hz – 20KHz or lower. Do not waste your money on anything with a high distortion rating like 0.1 THD @ 20Hz – 20KHz or higher, it will sound terrible.

Don’t worry about how many watts the amp is rated, there isn’t enough of a difference in home stereo amps & surround sound amps wattage output to worry about how many watts the amp is. The difference between 75 watts RMS @ 20Hz – 20KHz per channel amp & a 200 watts RMS @ 20Hz – 20KHz per channel is negligible.

If the choice is between a 100 watts RMS @ 20Hz – 20KHz per channel amp & 1,000 watts RMS @ 20Hz – 20KHz per channel amp, than yeah theres a big difference, but you’re not likely going to see those kind of differences unless your looking at professional audio.

Stay away from over priced low quality junk like Bose & Sony.

Buy speakers with your ears. Test each pair in the show room that’s in your price range & make sure they don’t have a subwoofer turned on. Buy the pair that sounds best.

Buy a powered subwoofer, don’t worry about how big or ugly it looks as you can hide it. Subs sound better against the walls (not touching) & in a corner, than out in the open.
