Product Review Water Softeners

Are whole house water filters or water softeners worthwhile? Does anybody have any objective information?

I’ve noticed that the water in my house is drying out my eyes, skin, and hair as if I had been swimming all day.

I’m looking at installing one on my house and am just wondering if it will make a difference. Are they expensive to maintain? Should I test my water first? Did you notice a difference after they installed theirs? Anybody got a product review?

Any info much appreciated!

I have owned 4 houses and the current one came with a water softener and whole house water filter. I am very impressed with both. The water softener uses about $4 per month of salt. WE notice that the shower stays very clean all the time, but the biggest difference is how much better your skin feels. Winter used to dry out my skin but not anymore.
The water filter needs to be replace about once every 3 years and cost about $90. Our water tastes as good as expensive bottled water and is very clean. We send samples to the filter company and they send back test results. I do not know what these unit cost new, but if/when they go bad, I will for sure replace them. Well worth the money.
